Hi,

My name is Marcus Knupp, and I need your help in order to actualize my creative vision.

I'm based in Berlin, I work as an illustrator, and I'm what some people have come to identify as a 'third culture kid' - meaning I've spent so much time living in Germany (my place of birth) and the United States (the flag on my passport) that answering questions like ''where are you from'' can never be answered with an easy short answer.

I've spent 12 years in Berlin and have to come to see it as my home. Here I've explored a wide array cultural events, attitudes, ways of thinking, and yes my own identity. As an artist and a gay man this journey has inspired a multitude of works but primairly drawings and an interest in both text and image based story telling.

Mac will be a graphic novel that combines autobiographical and biographical storytelling to examine the effects of HIV / AIDS on the development of gay culture, trauma and identity. The project will address these issues through two narrative strands set in different settings and time frames: New Orleans in the 1980s at the height of the AIDS pandemic and contemporary Berlin in the ‘post-AIDS’ climate. The protagonists of both stories are gay men of the same family - reflecting myself (Berlin) and my uncle (New Orleans).

The first narrative will take the form of a biographical outline of the life of my uncle (who referred to himself as Mac), with particular focus on his experiences as a HIV-positive man in New Orleans during the 1980s and 1990s. Attitudes towards homosexuals, homophobia, fears of HIV and the rights of gay people will be discussed.

The second narrative is based on my own experience as a gay man in Berlin, where I have lived for twelve years. The narrative thread is located in present-day Berlin, at a time when I, like many others, gained a better understanding of our relationship to gay histories and the struggles and worries associated with it. Attention will also be paid to questions around improving HIV treatment and care, expanding human rights protection for members of the LGBTQ community and new forms of gay self-expression that are ‘post-AIDS’ in the digitally connected world.

‘’How did I get here, where am I going, and what a fucking mess of a world we’re in’’ is a sentiment that might offer a bridge between the experiences explored by the two protagonists.

With this crowdfunding initiative I hope to raise enough funding to cover the production costs of the graphic novel, and create a small allowance for a research and content development period. To fully realize this project I estimate a full year will be required to collect necessary research materials and develope content (both image and text). The goal amount of 8.000,00 Euro will allow for work periods (2 full-time months) and cover the costs of multiple printings once the final draft of Mac is completed.
